The Academy District 20 consists of five high schools, five middle schools, eighteen elementary schools and one Charter school in the Colorado Springs area. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, all schools within the district offer different programs and opportunities than the neighborhood schools, presenting an altered schedule or focus. Recognized throughout the Pikes Peak Region, students in District 20 possess a strong basis in core subjects, confirmed by consistently high test scores. Academic programs, such as the Odyssey of the Mind and the National Honor Society, the career-oriented clubs of DECA and Future Business Leaders, as well as challenging spelling bees and computer clubs hone skills that are imperative for success. In addition to academic education, several complimentary social and art programs are offered to students including music, physical education, performing arts and a wide variety of intramural and interscholastic athletics.
Every school continually evaluates and improves technology programs that allow the students to use the latest tools, library/media and computer centers for a comprehensive education. District 20 students are also provided advanced placement courses, E.S.L. and D.A.R.E. programs, along with vocational and technical trades. While special programs add to the educational arena, the district views educators, students, parents and the community as partners in education.
The District's Aspen Valley High School and Discovery Canyon Campus (DCC) offers a non-traditional atmosphere for students to thrive. The Discovery Canyon Campus (DCC) is a public school offering pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade levels, focused on integrating science and mathematics through a comprehensive curriculum and real-life applications. DCC students benefit from sharing multiple grade levels, allowing mentoring and tutoring programs from their peers. Additionally, DCC is a candidate International Baccalaureate (IB) school that presents an equalized curriculum with assessments and real world relevance. IB offers the Diploma Years Program for 11th and 12th grades, the Middle Years Program for students 11-16 years old and the Primary Years Program for students 3-12 years old. In addition to student development, professional opportunities are plentiful for teachers, extending their repertoire and working with new instructional methods and strategies.
